The Armstrong County soil survey maps five associations: Pullman-Randall on the High Plains, and Abilene-Wichita, Berthoud-Mansker-Potter, Miles-Olton and Broken lands-Quinlan-Weymouth on the Rolling Plains.
Claude is in the northern, High Plains part of the county, which is Pullman-Randall country. The survey describes Pullman and Randall clays as very slowly permeable and compact but does not use the term shrink and swell. The March 2021 tornado day
On 13 March 2021, of eight confirmed Panhandle tornadoes, two crossed Armstrong County. An EF1 with 110 mph winds tracked through Palo Duro Canyon spanning Randall and Armstrong counties between 3:48 and 4:14 pm, and an EF0 with 81 mph winds tracked from Palo Duro Canyon to Washburn across the same two counties between 4:06 and 4:34 pm. A further tornado occurred southwest of Groom in Armstrong County at 5:02 pm. There were no injuries or deaths.

And it has a film history: Hud in 1963, Sunshine Christmas in 1977, the closing sunset scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989, and Leap of Faith in 1993 were shot in and around Claude.
